Cracking Open Learning

An incubator with eggs and baby chicks

Mr. Manny Gonzales (parent) and his family made a generous donation to Miss Mace’s classroom at Frazier Park Elementary, gifting an incubator and fertilized eggs. This thoughtful gesture allowed students to witness the miraculous journey of life as baby chicks hatched before their eyes. Mr. Gonzales explained the intricate incubation process, detailing the 21-day transformation from embryo to chick.

The hands-on experience complemented the class’s lessons on chicken life stages, enriching their understanding through science and art. Students crafted and decorated chick-themed artwork, engaging their creativity while reinforcing their knowledge.

On Easter, five chicks hatched, followed by five more by the next Tuesday. Out of 12 eggs, 10 successfully hatched, and students got to observe the chicks grow during their first week. Some students even got to pet the chicks, fostering a sense of responsibility and care. The class voted on creative names for the chicks, including M & M (in honor of Principal Mr. McNelis), Leela, Estella, Bubbles, Skittles, Pinky, Mafia, Rufio, Peachy, and Mia.

This experience gave students a firsthand look at the chicken life-cycle, promoting a communal spirit and enthusiasm for learning. As they reflect on this adventure, the class is filled with hope and excitement to repeat it next year, eager to explore life’s wonders once again.
