Slime Time Success: Students Earn the Ultimate Reward for Showing Up

This past week, laughter, cheers, and a whole lot of blue goo filled the air as students, staff, and families gathered for one of the most anticipated traditions of the school year — the 5th Annual Slime the Principal event!

As part of our monthly attendance celebration, students with 100% attendance for the month earned the honor of sliming Principal Mr. McNelis. This year, between August and/or September, an impressive 213 out of 242 students achieved perfect attendance and took part in the messy, joy-filled event.

At the direction of emcee Mrs. Hon, the crowd erupted into a rhythmic chant of “Slime the Principal! Slime the Principal!” as each class stepped up to the blacktop, where a special slime station had been set up. Students eagerly poured cups of brightly colored slime over Principal McNelis, and the fun didn’t stop there — teachers, staff, and even some parents joined in, taking turns sliming Mr. McNelis alongside the students! The shared laughter and excitement made the event even more memorable for the entire school community.

“One of the things we emphasize is the importance of being at school each and every day,” said Mr. McNelis (while dripping in slime). “Our motto, ‘Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow — Attendance Counts,’ is more than just words; it’s the foundation for student success.”

Why Attendance Matters

Research shows that regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. According to Attendance Works, students who miss just two days of school per month, about 10% of the school year, are considered chronically absent, which can significantly affect reading proficiency, test scores, and even graduation rates later on.

When students attend school regularly, they not only strengthen academic skills but also build lasting relationships, develop responsibility, and become active members of their learning community. Of course, as Principal McNelis reminds families, “When students are sick, we always want them to stay home and rest — health comes first.”

The school’s efforts have clearly paid off. Chronic absenteeism has decreased significantly thanks to the collaborative work of students, families, and staff who value education and engagement.

What’s Next?

Each month brings a new and exciting attendance celebration, and students are already buzzing with anticipation about what’s planned for next month. Whether it’s a special surprise, a wacky challenge, or another creative incentive, one thing’s for sure — students will keep showing up, learning, and achieving.

The Slime the Principal event wasn’t just about fun; it was about building a culture of consistency, commitment, and community. As the slime washed away, one thing remained crystal clear: attendance really does count.
