Students had a flurry of fun learning in Ms. Coyle’s second-grade class! Recently, they dove into the fascinating world of snow using Mystery Science. Our young explorers discovered that snow appears white because of the many layers of ice that build up. This phenomenon occurs when light scatters in all directions, giving snow its white appearance.
To reinforce this concept, the students engaged in a creative hands-on activity. They designed their own snowflake patterns and then “built up” snow by layering wax paper on top. As they added more layers, they observed how the wax paper’s transparency changed. Just like snow, the wax paper became opaque when the layers became too thick. This interactive experiment helped solidify their understanding of why snow is white. Ms. Coyle is proud of her curious learners!
